Background of the Study
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, particularly in developing countries. It is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and primarily affects the lungs, though it can also impact other parts of the body (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2024). The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that TB is one of the leading causes of death from infectious diseases, especially in regions with high poverty levels, malnutrition, and limited healthcare access (Adebayo & Tijani, 2024).
Demographic variables such as age, gender, socioeconomic status, and population density play a critical role in TB transmission and prevalence. Low-income communities with poor sanitation and inadequate healthcare access often experience higher TB rates (Usman & Bello, 2024). In Nigeria, Adamawa State has been identified as a TB hotspot due to its dense population, high poverty rates, and challenges in healthcare delivery (Olaniyan et al., 2023).
Understanding how demographic factors influence TB prevalence can help policymakers develop targeted interventions to reduce transmission and improve treatment outcomes. This study seeks to analyze the impact of demographic variables on TB prevalence in Adamawa State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite national and international TB control programs, Adamawa State continues to experience high TB prevalence (Adebayo & Tijani, 2024). Many affected individuals do not seek timely treatment due to socioeconomic barriers, leading to increased transmission rates (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2024).
There is a lack of data on the specific demographic groups most affected by TB in the state, making it difficult to implement targeted interventions. Without a clear understanding of the role of age, gender, and socioeconomic factors, TB control efforts may remain ineffective (Usman & Bello, 2024). This study aims to address these gaps by evaluating the influence of demographic variables on TB prevalence in Adamawa State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To determine the prevalence of tuberculosis in Adamawa State.
2. To analyze the impact of age, gender, and socioeconomic status on TB prevalence.
3. To assess the role of healthcare access in TB diagnosis and treatment.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of tuberculosis in Adamawa State?
2. How do demographic factors such as age, gender, and socioeconomic status affect TB prevalence?
3. What are the barriers to healthcare access for TB diagnosis and treatment?
Research Hypotheses
1. Tuberculosis prevalence is significantly influenced by demographic variables.
2. Low-income individuals have a higher risk of TB due to poor living conditions and limited healthcare access.
3. Limited healthcare access negatively impacts TB diagnosis and treatment outcomes.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will analyze TB cases across different demographic groups in Adamawa State. Limitations may include incomplete medical records, underreporting of TB cases, and challenges in reaching remote populations.
